The King Abdullah Medical Complex (KAMC) is one of Saudi Arabia’s largest tertiary hospital campuses, comprising two major hospitals with a combined capacity of 1,100 beds — a 500bed general hospital and a 600bed specialist hospital.
During the SARS epidemic, the Ministry of Health appointed Newpark to rapidly activate the 500bed general hospital, which had been completed but remained unopened. The facility required a complete redesign of the operating model, rapid expansion of ICU capacity, full technical and clinical commissioning, workforce mobilisation, and the establishment of governance and safety systems under extreme national pressure. As the source document notes, “the hospital opened safely and effectively, receiving ventilated patients within the first 24 hours.”
The project is now regarded as a regional benchmark for emergency hospital activation, demonstrating Newpark’s ability to deliver complex, highrisk commissioning programmes under intense scrutiny.
